The Last Exhale of July

The last morning of July arrived softly, just like today's word: compassion.

Something in the air felt like the moment after a long, full breath—the lungs still warm, the body humming with anticipation, the world somehow a little more spacious than it was yesterday.

I walked, as I often do.

The path turned, and a gentle energy whispered past. I stopped—not because of the sensation itself, but because of what it drew my attention to.

Like an embrace, the light wrapped itself around the trunk of an old tree, curving gently around the bark in what felt like a compassionate hug.

As I stood there, I found myself reflecting on how July's energy forecast had unfolded in my own life. The month's overarching themes were confidence, curiosity, boundaries, and perspective.

The past few months have stretched me, not unlike the light I witnessed this morning.

July invited us to become more deeply rooted in confidence while remaining open through curiosity. It reminded us that healthy boundaries strengthen relationships, that perspective transforms challenges into wisdom, and that the journey itself often contains the answers we seek.

Collectively, many of us have been stretched as we moved through a season that has asked a great deal of us—emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually; perhaps you have felt it too?

Life has not exactly been standing still.

Personally, I have been going without stopping, at a pace that was more than I thought I could sustain... and yet I have.

There is something profound in that realization.

To be able to give generously—our time, attention, encouragement, space, resources, and love—is often evidence that, somewhere along the way, we have received enough ourselves to become a well rather than simply a cup.

But wells need replenishment.

Not because they are empty, but because they are meant to keep flowing.

And maybe, after all this movement, another invitation is quietly appearing.

Not to stop.

Not to withdraw.

But to slow down enough to become one of the recipients of the care we so naturally extend to everyone else.

Because we belong inside the circle of our own generosity, too.

To have compassion for ourselves as we continue learning. As we continue growing. As we continue becoming…

Perhaps that is where compassion truly begins.

Not out there in grand gestures.

But here.

In the quiet turning toward whatever feels tired within us. And gently whispering: You did enough.

Most of us are well-practiced in offering compassion to others. The friend who calls in need. The stranger having a difficult day. We soften. We open. We make room.

Yet when it comes to ourselves, we often hold a much harsher standard.

I know this intimately. The recovering over-carer in me knows how easy it is to pour... and pour... and pour... until the giving becomes so familiar that receiving begins to feel uncomfortable.

So today I find myself wondering:

Where in your life is someone asking for your compassion... and might that someone be you?

Compassion was never meant to be a finite resource. It isn't something we spend until it's gone. It is a spring. The more we allow it to flow inward, the more naturally it flows outward.

Compassion is love with its sleeves rolled up.

It is the softening within me that makes room for the softening within you.

There is a tenderness to endings. The way a month, like a long exhale, finally lets itself go. I felt it in the light this morning. Gentler. The air is somehow more forgiving.

July taught us something.

Now August quietly waits to show us what we're ready to do with what we've learned.
