Passion

This morning, just outside my back door, the first passion flower of the season had opened.I've always been fascinated by passion flowers. The center of the flower reminds me of a pinwheel. Around it, hundreds of delicate threads dance in every direction. They are one of the most whimsical flowers—delicate and intricate, wild and orderly—a perfect blend of structure and chaos.

As I stood looking at it, it felt like a morning reflection blooming on a vine: part observation, part symbolism, part invitation. Many expressions. One flower. Abundant with beautiful detail. "Pay attention." "This moment matters." "Something is opening."

This flower doesn't try to make the wild parts neat. It incorporates them. Reinforcing a lesson I've been exploring all year: we become whole by allowing all of ourselves to belong. And the first bloom of the season is always different from the hundredth bloom. The first bloom is an announcement. Nature saying: The season has begun. The unfolding has started.

On a personal level, I find it interesting that this appeared today. Passion flowers are often associated with awakening, spiritual growth, trust, transformation, the integration of opposites, and the embodiment of spirit within the physical world. Many see them as flowers that bridge heaven and earth because they appear simultaneously botanical, celestial, and almost otherworldly. Yet the symbolism that speaks most deeply to me is wholeness. The flower is complex beyond belief. Every part serves a purpose. Nothing appears random. It reminds me that we don't have to eliminate parts of ourselves to become whole. Complexity can be beautiful. Different aspects of our nature can coexist in harmony. As someone exploring embodiment this year, that message lands deeply. Passion flowers are vines. They grow by reaching, climbing, extending, and trusting what they can attach to next. Trusting the journey. Following intuitive guidance. Growing through connection. Reaching toward the light. It feels very close to the message in Fourteen Feathers—one step, one feather, one moment of trust at a time.

One powerful thing about passion flower symbolism is that the bloom is temporary. The flower opens magnificently and then fades. A reminder that beauty does not need to last forever to matter. A reminder to be fully present when life opens. Bringing me full circle, to my word focus this year, embodiment.  The passion flower reminds me that wholeness is not found in becoming less of who we are, but in allowing every thread of who we are to belong, that beauty isn't found in perfection, but in the harmonious expression of every part of ourselves and by allowing all the threads of who we are to gather around a steady center and bloom.
